To the Parish Community of Our Lady of Guadalupe,

In response to the public health emergency caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has provided guidelines for parish ministries. Parish staff has met to determine how to adapt our Sunday liturgies given these guidelines.

Recognizing the emergency, Archbishop Gomez has addressed a letter to the faithful of the archdiocese today https://lacatholics.org/2020/03/13/letter-from-archbishop/. In the letter, the Archishop has dispensed all Catholics from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass for the weekends of March 14-15, March 21-22, and March 28-29.

Following the guidance from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we will still be celebrating Sunday Masses, but with several precautions to avoid the spread of the virus.

  • We will be observing the recommended 6 feet spacing for all who attend, if you are not already from the same family. Ushers will assist in seating the faithful with the appropriate spacing.
  • This will mean the Church will not accomodate as many people for Masses as before. So we will use the Parish Hall for overflow seating. Mass in the Church will be live streamed to the Hall, and ministers will bring the Eucharist over.
  • We will be adding a 5 PM Mass on Sunday afternoon for all those who may have been turned away from earlier masses
  • Those who stay home are encouraged to pray with the Scriptures for the day and to pray for us all during this difficult time for our world. All Sunday Masses will be live streamed on our Facebook page, found here @OLGChurch.HB . The Cathedral also live streams Mass via YouTube and Facebook https://lacatholics.org/mass-for-the-homebound/ . And in the charity of your prayers, consider remembering those who care for people suffering from any illness with this petition:

For doctors, nurses, caregivers and family members who care for the sick with gentleness and compassion, may they find strength in their works of mercy, we pray to the Lord.

The parish office will remain open with the usual office hours. However, all Family Faith Formation, Confirmation, Light The World, and In The Middle classes in March are postponed. The program coordinators will be communicating with the families regarding at-home and online options for the classes.

The Archdiocese is providing COVID-19 updates about parishes and schools on their website https://lacatholics.org/emergency/

If you have any concerns, you may contact the parish staff at [email protected]

Finally, we urge you to keep steadfast in faith and in prayer through this time of uncertainty.

Yours in Christ,
Fr Paul, Fr Carlos and the parish staff

Prayer in the Time of the Coronavirus
Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of Los Angeles
March 13, 2020

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,
Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.
We fly to you today as your beloved children.
We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,
as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother,
and gain for our nation and world,
and for all our families and loved ones,
the protection of your holy angels,
that we may be spared the worst of this illness.
For those already afflicted,
we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance.
Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful,
wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing,
teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.
Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence,
knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother,
health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,
keep us in the embrace of your arms,
help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen
