Rev. Raymond Mallett, OFM Conv.
Notes from the Clergy
I leave for my extended vacation today. I’m looking forward to this break. I’ve been in ministry as a priest for 33 years and this is the first time I’ve asked for some extra time for myself. Fr. Lazaro will be here taking care of the parish and Fr. John Heinz will join him. I’ll be visiting with my family and doing some car trips. My family is in Toledo, Ohio and this is where I was born and lived the first 17 years of my life.
When I return, I intend to get moving on a much needed remodel of our parish house, our friary. We have five friars living in the space that was built for four friars. The front of the friary is laid out for offices that were moved out of the friary 18 years ago. We need more living space and more rooms for friars. The remodel of our Friary was one of the original goals of our Capital Campaign of our parish which began before I arrived. Recently, our Parish Council and Finance Committee have said that this project should be a priority for the parish. Rick Lopez has already agreed to be our project manager. He did our Church project and he brought it in on time and under budget.
I believe that we can do this even during this recession. I intend to keep a lid on the spending and we will envision this project in a way that it can and will be done. After I hear project figures, I’ll be able to say more about the amount of funds that will be necessary. But as we begin, I want to assure you, that I intend to raise a portion of the needed funds outside of your parish. You can give to this project in the same way as you gave to the Church project by marking an envelope Building Fund and then placing it in the Sunday collection or mailing it to the parish. I’ll see you all in September—-have a good summer!

The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul

Parish Announcements
On Thursday, June 29th the church honors Saints Peter and Paul for the Christ-like way they lived their faith in the case of dire adversity. Martyrs for the faith, both paid the highest price for their beliefs. With red vestments the Church recognizes, in a visual way, the supreme witness to the faith given by the blood of the martyrs. Some people may think that martyrdom occurred mainly during the early period of Christianity and somewhat less frequently up through the Middle Ages. Actually, during the twentieth century the Catholic church has counted hundreds of men and women among those who have died for their faith. The basis for martyrdom is the belief that God is truth, and each of us is called to be a witness to that truth in words and deeds. Although most of us will not imitate the supreme witness of the martyrs in death, we do have an obligation to imitate them in witnessing to the truth as seen in the Scripture readings for this day.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” Our Lord loved us so much that he gave the life of His Son so that we would be saved. How many of us can truly say that we would be willing to give a part of ourselves to save the life of another? This selfless act is simpler than you may think. Our church is encouraging members to donate blood on Sunday, July 12th. Blood is used by trauma victims, cancer patients, open-heart surgery patients, burn victims, and newborns. Blood donors are able to give the gift of life to another in need. Please call or stop by the parish office

Parish Announcements
Each year, the annual Peter’s Pence collection, in support of the works of the Holy Father, is held in parishes across the country. The proceeds from this collection fund emergency relief assistance to those throughout the world who suffer from war, oppression, and natural disasters. The theme for this year’s collections is Anyone who has discovered Christ must lead others to him. Through works of charity, Catholics provide a powerful witness of love and deeds to empower the weak, the defenseless, and the voiceless, and to sustain those who suffer. As we participate in this special appeal, we join with the more thane one billion Catholics worldwide in a loving expression of solidarity. We share in the concern of the successor of Peter for the many different needs of the universal Church and for the relief of those most in need around the globe. This year the collection is scheduled for today June 28th. Together let us ask the Lord to bless the Holy Father and us, as well as those in need throughout the world.
