The Return of the Eucharist - Oct 29
Notes from the Clergy
Written by Rev. Raymond Mallett, OFM Conv.
Saturday, 25 October 2008

Image In the Year of the Lord, 2008; in the 34th week of our remodel of our Church; on Wednesday, October 29th at 7PM; we will solemnly return the Eucharist to our remodeled church and celebrate our first Mass.  Thanks be to God!  All are invited to attend.  Please gather in the Hall before 7PM.

All of last year’s First Communicants have been invited to join in our solemn procession.  They will gather in the 4th grade classroom and will need to be there by 6:45PM.  I would ask everyone else to meet in the Hall to be a part of our procession.  The doors to the Church will be closed and the Eucharist will be the first to enter.  If any of our elderly need special assistance, please go to the 5th Street and Massey doors.  People will be there to assist you and get you situated as you arrive—-you will be able to enter the Church early.

Thanks to each of you and your families for all you have done.  Your prayerful support and financial help has made our dream come true.  We still need approximately $40,000 to fully fund our remodel.  I know we can and will bring this fund raising to a close.

OLG Church in the Easy Reader

I would like share with you the article about our Blue Cross and the Church Remodel in the local South Bay paper, the Easy Reader.

Rose window, Blue Cross highlight Our Lady of Guadalupe remodel
by Michelle Fisher

After nearly nine months of attending Mass in the parish hall, Our Lady of Guadalupe parishioners will walk in a "Return to the Church" procession next Wednesday at 7 p.m. to their newly remodeled church. "This is the hope and dream of many years," said the Hermosa Beach Catholic Church's Pastor Father Ray Mallett. The $2.6 million in renovations to the 50-year-old church include a new roof, recessed lighting and skylights, new pews, new carpet and new stained glass windows. The offices and restrooms of the OLG parish school, built in 1961, were also refurbished. First Communicants of 2008 will each carry a rose in the procession, which celebrates the return of the Eucharist to the church. Jodi Scully, a parishioner for nearly 30 years and the parish secretary for 21 of those years, says she was overwhelmed when part of the church was torn down. "It was very emotional at the last Mass, too. We had no idea what the church was going to look like, but it is more beautiful now. And it's still home," she said. "There’'s a lot of history here for parishioners: weddings, baptisms and funerals. The milestones of our lives take place here," she said. Father Ray said, "I often tell people, 'Nothing is changing, but everything is changing.'"

Image Prayer will deepen our union with God.  In the Tabernacle and in the chapel, Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, is waiting.  He offers all of us the needy in body and spirit, gifts of  guidance and joy.  Please join us on Tuesday nights from 4-7PM.  Mother Theresa of Calcutta once said, “the time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth.  Ask Him to grant you the courage to serve Him.

The Blue Cross' Artist

Jean Schettler has been the artist painting our Blue Cross.  This act of love has taken her the last months to complete.  I’m pleased to tell you that she will be with us when we return to the Church on Wednesday, October 29th.  Jean lives in the Kentucky-Indiana area, near Louisville.  She and her family lived in Torrance for many years.  She used to pass near our Church each day on her way to work.  She will be visiting some family, who still live in the area, and will join us for our celebration. This will be an opportunity to welcome her and thank her for her efforts.

Reverence in the Church

Image At a recent meeting of our Parish Council, I was given an earful of perspectives about reverence in the Church, beverages and water in the church, behavior of children, proper dress, the chewing of gun and where it is discarded, the amount of talk and noise, the use of cell phones and texting and in general, the number of distractions to prayer experienced while we are together.  In the discussion, there were no conclusions nor was their always agreement on what each expected or found to  be a distraction.

Max Moulding
We thank Allen Fang, owner and operator of Max Moulding (13838 S. Figueroa, Los Angeles), for the donation of the beautiful molding that was used in the framing of our Stations of the Cross.  The moulding has a retail value of nearly $7,500.00.  Thanks Allen Fang, for this generous donation.  Thanks also to Becky Gonzales, our parishioner, for her help in arranging this.

John Paul’s Designs, Inc.
We thank Paul and Maria Reis of John Paul’s Designs – Picture Framing (2675 Skypark Drive, #311) for their help with our project, especially with the framing of our Stations of the Cross and the repainting of our religious statues.  It was Paul’s eyes that saw our old Stations of the Cross and saw the possibilities of using them again with new frames.  Paul and Maria have done many gifts for our parish.  We are grateful for their generosity.
